On February 5, 2002 I had a special opportunity to participate in a press conference with alpine skier, Picabo Street. With the help of Nike I was able to attend the press conference via the Internet. Nike provided a live video feed, a chat interface to type questions and a moderator to floor questions from the web. The technology Nike put together gave the feeling of personally attending. The press conference was held in Salt Lake City in room was filled with news people. You could feel the excitement of the Olympic games when Picabo started answering questions.
Winterheat - You mentioned earlier about equipment changes, what kind of adjustments have you made compared to the old equipment you started out with.
You know it's been a really tough adjustment, it's been very hard to get used to the new skis, and the way they turn. They've taken a lot of my feeling, my sensation, my power out of the sport and put into the technology. You now just roll your knees in and kinda follow your skis around often times in the turn. For me it's taken my sensation out of the sport alittle bit, and it's taken alittle wind out of my sails for my desire to be part of the sport, to be honest.
I however really, enjoy the skis I'm skiing on now. I had a great result in March on them, and I expect to have another good result on Monday. I like them on the snow here on North America they've perform the best.
Winterheat - Sometime in the future you have a 6 year old daughter racing with a local ski team, how much interaction will mom have with the coach?
Pretty big interaction. Ya know it's kinda funny because, a lot of people now occupying some the ski teams that I was part of when I was young, a lot of the coaches have since moved on, it's more of a baby sitting service. I not going to drop my kid off and have them baby sat at ski team. Mommy's going be there, mommy's going to be in the coaches ear making sure everything goes the way its suppose to go. The program run the way it needs to be run for my daughter to have the best chance.
I have had a lot of coaches tell me they would give anything have me and my dad and his "In your face attitude" back in their program because it shows passion, motivation and desire for the kids to make it and to be the best that they can be. Maybe the next me sitting up here in front telling how psyched they are to go bring home gold.
Skiiii Ya Later !!!
