RUKA, Finland (March 17) - In biting, zero-degree cold, four U.S. aerialists, including World Cup champion Jeret "Speedy" Peterson (Boise, ID), moved into the final round of competition Thursday in nighttime qualifications at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships.
With the temperature at -18 C, Peterson was joined by Ryan St. Onge (Steamboat Springs, CO) in the men's final 12, who will compete for the medals Friday night in this city near the Arctic Circle. Earlier, Jana Lindsey (Black Hawk, SD) and Emily Cook (Belmont, MA) qualified for the women's finals.
"The cold is ridiculous," U.S. Head Coach Jeff Wintersteen said. "I mean, we can deal with it, but you figure in mid-march...on St. Patty's Day...c'mon.."
Steve Omischl had 251.64 points and led Canadians into the top three spots in the men's contest while Peterson was seventh and St. Onge eighth. At finals Friday night, skiers will get two jumps, running in reverse order of how they qualified.
World Cup champion Nina Li of China topped the women's qualifying with 200.03. Lindsey was ninth and Cook 11th.
"The girls have been pushing hard and they gave it a good run. Kate [Reed; Montrose, CO] was one spot away from qualifying...and, really, our focus with the women has been next season, and they've made excellent progress.
"But, for the guys, I'm disappointed for Joe [Pack - Park City, UT]. He's been jumping great and he dragged his hands on his first jump," Wintersteen said, "then just nailed his second jump, maybe his best jump of the season...and finished less than a point away from qualifying. It's pretty frustrating, but now it's over...and we start over [Friday] night."
Worlds has a double bill Friday, with ski cross finals in the afternoon and aerials at night.
