U.S. Ski Team News MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, Calif. (May 26) - Springtime snow meant U.S. alpine men had plenty of cover for their first on-snow camp of the Olympic preseason, giving them time at Mammoth Mountain for speed and gate-running drills.

About two dozen World Cup, Europa Cup and development-level athletes trained for more than a week earlier this month. About eight other athletes, who couldn't make the camp because of college studies or other reasons, will be at Mammoth in early June for their first on-snow training, Head Coach Phil Mcnichol said.

Defending World Cup overall champion Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) and Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA), who collected two medals at the World Championships last winter, skipped the camp but Olympian Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA), who is returning after missing much of the last two season with knee injuries, took part in the drills.

"Marco had a great camp; it was a good start for him," McNichol said. "So far so good in getting him back. He'll be with us on snow in New Zealand in August and then join the speed group in Chile for speed work."

The camp - with John "Johno" McBride, USSA's International Coach of the Year last season, directing the downhill and super G training while Mike Morin, SL/GS head coach, overseeing the tech work - faced poor weather at the start. However, snow conditions improved in surprisingly short order and Mammoth's race crew kept the training on track with the course preparation.

"We did fight a little weather. I mean," McNichol said, "we showed up in a blizzard - really, a January snowstorm - so we missed a day right away, but the snow firmed up and we got right into it. It was like midseason for a bit...

"It was good training. We had great, full-length speed work, did some fundamental GS [giant slalom] and some slalom...and then some more basic super G and downhill. We made all our days," McNichol said.
